The Daniel Fast – Meal Ideas

So, judging by my Google Analytics A LOT (over 100 people) have found my blog looking for meal ideas for the Daniel Fast! This is something that Chris and I did last year during lent and it was definitely a challenge, to say the least. A lot of people start the year in a time of Fasting, so just to recap for you Daniel Fast searchers out there, here were some of the meals that got us through.

First things first, I HIGHLY recommend picking up The Daniel Fast book if you are going to attempt this – the recipes in there are SUPER helpful!!

Breakfast Ideas:

Idea 1:

Brown Rice Crispie Cereal, unsweetened Rice Milk, banana or strawberries (you MUST check the labels on the cereal and milk to be sure it fits! I found a great Brown Rice cereal at whole foods and the ONLY ingredient is puffed brown rice)

Idea 2:

Same as above but shredded mini wheats, obviously not frosted :)

Idea 3:

Oatmeal prepared with rice milk or water and a dash of salt. Throw in some strawberries, raisins or natural PB at the end to add some umph!

Idea 4:

Ezekial 4:9 Cereal with rice milk and raisins: you gotta check the labels on this cereal, and it is not the tastiest cereal but once I added Rice Milk and raisins it was actually pretty good! This cereal is super high in fiber and will definitely keep you full a lot longer than typical cereals!

Lunch/Dinner Ideas:

Idea 1:

Whole Wheat Pasta with Red Sauce and Tabouli. The trick is finding a sauce without sugar! You’d be surprised how many things you buy have sugar (and preservatives) in them, it’s actually quite ridiculous. We found an awesome product at Kroger, it’s a Private Selection sauce that is all natural ingredients…perfect. Takes a little more time at the grocery store, but I highly encourage you to check out the labels of the things you are buying, there is absolutely no need for sugar in red sauce.

We also added in some crumbled tabouli for some more calories and extra protein. Tabouli has a nutty texture and really takes on the flavor of whatever you cook it with. You’ll probably have to head over to your Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s to find this product, but it adds a nice texture to this meal…kind of like ground meat! So throw it in a pan, cook it up and then toss it into your pasta, sauce and some green peppers….delish and easy!

Idea 2:

Stir-fried veggies with brown rice, tofu and peanuts. This was my FAVE meal during the fast – soooooo deeeelish!!! Just make sure you look for a Daniel Fast friendly soy sauce…not easy!!

Idea 3:

Homemade veggie burgers (in book) and sweet potato “fries”

Snack Ideas:

Idea 1:

Homemade Hummus and Daniel Fast friendly crackers

Idea 2:

Fresh fruit and veggies

Idea 3:

Nuts

There so SO many things you can eat on this fast, just get creative!!!

Daniel Fast during lent is how I became a vegan. It’s actually all Chris’ fault. He posted about it on Facebook and that’s why I tried doing it. Just never went back to animal products after that. I didn’t know there was a book!!!! I’ll have to get it next time I’m in the states.

Are Meatless/ Soy Free Veggie burgers allowed on the Daniel fast?

That totally depends. You HAVE to read the labels to be sure all ingredients are daniel fast friendly and that there are NO preservatives. very hard to find! Only ones I ever found that worked were the Trader Joe’s one. ALWAYS read labels!

Great ideas for meals in this post! As we know, Daniel’s diet was vegetables and water. However, today’s modified version of this diet we call the Daniel Fast still results in one main point.. which is to honor God with our food and drink choices. That’s why the Daniel Fast is such a personal experience between a person and God. For some, giving up coffee will be much harder, and for others giving up sugar will be the biggest challege.
